I was handed my first real investigative assignment yesterday, and I'm scared I'll mess it up. Probably because it's way different from my usual stuff, but there's no way I was going to turn it down. What's a good way to start on an assignment you're not sure you can handle? Should I just jump in without overthinking it?

Plan of action and jump in. The only way you get better and more confident is by doing those things, even if you aren’t 100% sure how it’ll all go. Congrats on the assignment. Do your best and learn from the rest.

Don't overthink it. They wouldn't have given you the assignment if they didn't think you were ready. Trust your gut and jump in! I bet you'll do awesome.

Just do it, as they say. Thinking about it and worrying about it can be the worst thing. Jump in and get that first edit out and you'll feel much better

Start small—outline your questions, verify your sources early, and build step by step. No one nails investigations overnight. The best reporters admit what they don’t know and chase the gaps.

If you’re scared, you’re probably not ready. Investigative work isn’t “learn on the job,” it’s high-stakes. Jumping in without experience risks mistakes that could cost people reputations or worse. Better to shadow first.

Greetings from Madison, Wisconsin. I'm a reporter with more than 32 years of experience and I feel that, lately, local television news has been kind of dead, but I am pleased to fight for it from my local newspaper. Locals love to see someone from their own town succeeding or finding out something inspiring.

I am a firm believer that this will not change for a long time, local TV will continue to live as long as we stand for it.

One of my direct reports has asked about going part time. They currently manage special reports in a bi-weekly publication, working closely with sales, freelance writers, and an internal designer. Job duties are primarily project management and editing/proofreading. As the first read on articles, they need to have an understanding of the material (business/regulation). Has anyone had experience with job sharing in this type of a role?
