I recently applied to the Content Designer, 2023 Graduate remote role at Atlassian and I'd appreciate it if I could get a referral.
Here are some details to aid in your decision-making:
- Last summer, I worked at Google as a UX Content Design Intern.
- I am currently in a grad program at
NYU and will graduate in Spring 2023.
- Before graduate school, I spent 3+ years as a Copywriter in Advertising.
I'd really appreciate any recommendation I can get at this time.

Ad is having a reckoning right now. Now’s the best time to go in house
How do you find that though. I’m in the same boat. Just got let go at the end of August but am not in a big market (near Baltimore) so would need something remote but there doesn’t seem to be ANYTHING! Is so depressing….
Get out. I wish I had done so the first time I was laid off; I was 10 years in, and that was 20 years and 2 layoffs ago. This industry is like an accordion, squeezes hard when the economy is down.
Run. Fast. Reinvent yourself. Now!
I was laid off for the first time in my career awhile ago. Definitely do what VP said. Reinvent yourself! Trust your gut and take advantage of the opportunity to pivot. Good luck!
I am in the process of reinventing myself. After a 28 year career in advertising, I’m done. I don’t want to be in an office or commute an hour to get there. Look at it as a blessing. After the initial gut punch, I picked myself up and realized everything happens for a reason. It was my sign. Good luck to you!
What are you doing now? I’m curious!
I’ve been laid off 3 times in the past 25 years. Yes, I still work at an agency, but each time I looked beyond agency life. I really prioritized what was important or non negotiable in my next job. Knowing what I wanted and was willing to give up allowed me to open up my mind to other types of positions and found myself going into interviews more confident then ever. This last time (2024) I knew I didn’t want to work somewhere that hadn’t made final decisions about in office, that I would be part of office policy making, and personalities of colleagues was something taken into account. I got all these things! Where I work is far from perfect but I prioritized working somewhere that I would respected vs what award winning I could possibly, maybe someday work on. Good luck to you.
Do your best to get out of the industry is my advice, but I’ll warn you, it’s not easy and requires a LOT of networking, cold messaging (I recommend at least having a few connections in common to motivate a response). I’ve been unemployed for a little over a year now and trying to corporate side and haven’t been successful… just this week though I accepted a job at a social media agency because, well, the bills have to be paid 🤷🏻♀️
Hoping it will be different given it’s not a “traditional” agency but I’m also a realist, and I’m expecting the same. I won’t stop looking to make the jump out of the agency world but wanted to provide that warning. The job market is already awful out there, and from what I’ve heard from those at corporate is that the jobs there are COMPETITIVE. So go into it eyes wide open and take any / all informational conversations you can, it can surprise you what doors could open from those!
I got laid off in may after ten years at the same agency. Nearly 20 years experience total, mostly agencies. I decided to try freelancing full time. I have to hustle a little but I like the freedom of it all. I am privileged to say I have a good savings and a partner who I can rely on for health insurance though. I was stressed at first but now see the layoff as a blessing in disguise. I wasn’t happy though the work was simple and I had flexibility. I did speak with a career coach a couple times and she helped me put my thoughts and goals in order. Feel free to dm and I’ll pass on her info.
Curious, have you found most of your clients through your network or are you having to do much cold calling and outreach? Its been a years since ive freelanced, curious what the market is like right now?
I wouldn’t close any doors and assess opportunities as you get them. Although rare, some agencies are great work places.
I got laid off earlier this year after an agency merger. I intentionally dedicated 2 weeks to reflection and processing before making any moves toward finding new work. By the end, I decided to move in-house.
I felt doubtful, because I worked so hard to get to where I am. Passing up a couple very desirable agency roles was so scary.
But I made the right move. I feel like a whole person again. I work hard at my job, but now I’m not living to work. Just working hard—usually only 9-5, M-F—and being rewarded for it. What a concept!
And, I’m in the process of securing an additional, really awesome part-time contract with a different company to make stuff that I love. Because I have the time and energy!!
Trust your gut.
Rising Star
I would try to go brand side, somewhere I dig. Or go get that MFA I’ve always wanted to 🥲
It would depend strongly on the size of the nest egg I’ve created for myself.
