I was one of five lawyers let go in a massive, company-wide corporate restructuring at a tech startup last month. I’ve never been fired or laid off before, and sitting at home sending out resumes is doing a number on me. When recruiters ask why I left my last role, I say corporate downsizing, but I always worry they secretly think I was selected because I was the weakest link. Is there a way to frame a layoff so it's clear it was not a performance issue?

I have a governmental entity client in Texas that wants to offer 6 weeks of paid parental leave for all employees, even those who aren’t eligible for FMLA. After the paid 6 weeks, the employee can choose to continue paid leave using any accrued personal leave.

Texas does not have a paid parental leave statute.

If paid leave above what is required is offered for parents, do we also have to provide the same benefit to other employees that are eligible for unpaid leave?

I’m very nervous because the group with whom I’m interviewing works with life science/tech clients and the attorneys have strong science/tech backgrounds; and I do not.
