I was reviewing a complex operational process yesterday, but my most critical task of the week was actually figuring out the logistics of a toddler’s milk and nap schedule so I could prep for a technical interview. We talk a lot about "work-life balance" in STEM, but lately, it feels less like a balance and more like extreme context switching. For the working parents out there, how do you mentally transition from "engineering/ops mode" to "parent mode" without dropping the ball on either?

Gonna level with you, I do drop the ball from time to time. And it doesn't eat me up because most days, I'm great at both. Nowhere close to perfect, but I do enough to know I'm a solid worker and - more importantly - a good dad.

You just called out exactly what I've been avoiding. I'm exhausting myself trying to keep every single ball in the air instead of just accepting that some are rubber and can bounce. Appreciate the reality check.

I think it's hard to transition between modes. It's important to balance both and not let one overflow and effect the other.

When it comes to picking one over the other, I do my best to pick my family over work. Finding that balance is hard, and sometimes it's impossible. I keep telling myself to do the best I can, even best I can do is not as good as I would like sometimes.

I'm 4 years into my career, currently I work at one of the largest public advisory firms writing research and taking advisory calls with CIOs/CFOs on strategy around IT Cost Optimization, IT/technology finance, benchmarking, budgeting etc. I enjoy the role but fear not being able to do much with this experience. I fear this due to the fact that I simply talk strategy and roadmaps with no technical experience of having ever done these activities myself.

Looking for a remote/hybrid/onsite (Calgary,Alberta) job for my boyfriend who got almost 5 years of experience in proposal writing, RFP, RFI and bid management for a civil engineering firm. He also got an MBA, non drinker, non smoker, clean driving abstract and very polite. He gave out tons of cv in indeed job posters for the past 5 months, ends up becoming the filler candidate, took a huge toll in his mental health and we are going through some very rough patches.
