Future forecasting can be tough. But, if being an American has taught me anything, it’s this: Imagine the stupidest possible outcome. That’s probably what will happen.
I think AI will just get better and people will use it in smarter, less generic ways.
It'll be less of a differentiator and just a useful tool that everyone uses.
Yeah, AI isn't going anywhere, especially as it iterates and gets less obvious
Aren’t you just the cutest
It’s going to be hard to not sound sarcastic or dismissive, but I’m sincerely not intending either of those.
But that ship has already sailed, “commercial art” has always been defined by one criterion - lowest cost.
Generative AI is going to improve dramatically over the next few years - quickly to the point you will not see the seams - after that it will only be a race to the bottom in terms of cost.
Agencies and businesses will not pay more simply to support human labor - and even if they do, they’ll be competing against others that don’t and therefore at a disadvantage.
All commercial art product will eventually be generative just because of that alone.
Think of hand-setting of type, airbrushing photo retouch & manual paste up - all used to be dominant technologies until a cheaper, digital method came along. This is no different.
I’m sorry, but human-made artwork will continue to exist only as fine art.
Indeed, I’m afraid that “commercial art” will go the way of pop music production. There has been little “human performed” instrumental music performed on pop tracks for some decades now. Most pop/hip hop/etc. is programmed on a synthesizer and then some overdubs are added. This is the only way that the speed & cost efficiency now required can be achieved. Many/most vocals are also processed. Does it mean that there are only a small fraction of studio musician/engineer jobs that used to exist? Yes, but that is the way the industry went starting in the ‘80’s/‘90’s. The upside is that now virtually anyone can be their own recording star.
Advertising, and long form a/v content are going the same way.
🙏… if we had a functioning government would love if copyrights were protected and AI couldn’t use copywritten source content
There are already companies popping up that don’t use copy-write source content and you get good results. Or if they do, they pay money to the creator.
Any agency that takes a “no-AI” stance will be the equivalent of an early-1900s wooden carriage manufacturer that takes a “no automated vehicles” stance.
Great idea. Start that agency now
"no AI" then becomes synonymous with "we're more expensive"
And slower...

They will be called We Are Dinosaurs.
some smaller design studios already have that.
Nah they will embrace AI. Look at Mischief
Not likely.
