L&E and Construction. Due to the likely high volume of ID, something that may have a high volume workload like some aspects of real estate litigation or creditors rights.
The recruiter’s perception is shaped by interactions with their clients that gatekeep/discriminate against people with ID experience/background. The firms often claim that there are “legitimate business reasons” or that “they can’t market ID experience to clients.” But there’s no reason to accept it when staying in ID is a dead-end job with long hours and low pay.
Think about reworking your resume in a way that doesn’t scream ID. A resume is simply a piece of paper that can get you a meeting.
If there is something you’d like to do or are interested in, networking your way in is probably your best bet, even though it’s a longer process.
Commercial litigation. Highlight transferable litigation skills on your resume. Try to exit ID sooner than later because the longer you stay, the harder it is to pivot.
That was my wife’s experience after 4 years in ID, anyway. Now she does complex commercial lit, but it took time, a lot of effort, and some luck (on top of being a fantastic attorney) to get there.
Rising Star
ID is notoriously hard to get out of. Many full service firms won’t hire ID attorneys for litigation roles. In house it’s really only marketable at insurance companies, which, fwiw I hear isn’t a bad gig. Your best bet is to get back to general litigation, even if it’s a smaller firm, and then lateral up again from there.
Does your firm do anything other than ID? For instance, our firm does ID and Employment/Business Litigation. Interested attorneys have a chance to mentor into other areas.
