Munich, Berlin, and Heidelberg are all excellent choices, especially for travelers who love literature, history, and art. The best time to visit is from May to September

Germany has a lot of smaller cities to visit that are not too crowded - places like Erfurt, Dresden, Bremen are nice and not flooded with visitors but also lack the larger attractions. A day trip down the Rhine River is beautiful. Try a German sauna complex filled with different saunas and hot tubs and cold plunges (clothing not allowed). Try the local specialty, and get white asparagus (spargel) if in season
In Germany, I would recommend Berlin, Munich, Cologne, and Heidelberg; they all have a great sense of history and a wonderful urban atmosphere. The best time to visit, in my opinion, is spring or autumn, when the weather is pleasant and there are fewer crowds.
Also, although Prague isn't in Germany, it's definitely worth a stop if your itinerary allows. Prague Square and the Old Town have a truly unique atmosphere
