… a copy supervisor role that will impact the rate. Then of course there are agencies that lowball rates no matter what. But in general, what had been $125 an hour for a copy supervisor is often being a limited to $60-$90 an hour and that’s not using a mediator like a Staffing firm. Hours— what used to be filling a role full-time is now often presented as 20 to 40 hours a week or 10 to 20 hours a week. In the past, one had been able to bill a full week regardless of the actual projects but these days I’m seeing agencies limiting to only exact hours worked. Now this presents an interesting legal issue— if you’re coming in as a W-2 Contractor, it’s a violation of the fair labor laws if you are expected to be available full-time. But I’m not seeing agencies very on this issue nor be concerned about the law. I’m seeing it consistently across multiple agencies. Now if you have a 1099 it’s a slightly different story, but I’m finding the majority of agency clients only want W-2. Opportunities.— the freelance market is of course flooded by recently layoff with individuals trying to get some work beyond their limited unemployment. This of course increases competition for the opportunities that are out there and further the downward trend of rates.
I will also add that I’m seeing plenty of people go a year without clients, especially if they won’t budge on some of the issues above, rightly or wrongly. I can also share that for me personally I’ve been well booked since last summer into the coming spring. But sometimes it matters what concessions you decide to make.
what are some of the things you’re seeing?
Staffing agencies are not mediators. They are placed there strategically so there is NO negotiation directly or with themselves. You negotiating upward in cost, eats into their profit. You want to avoid staffing agencies at all costs. They will take 50% of your paychecks.
You bill for AVAILABLE time and time WORKED. You never bill exact time worked. You agree to minimum hours worked so you have at least something you can rely on. You negotiate this in writing upfront.
W2 and W9 is how YOU position yourself. They can make anything work..
Expect much more layoffs. Which means a lot of uneducated “freelancers” charging less and less. Don’t follow the trends.

I’ve been getting around $150-165/hr for CD health gigs.
