40. I’ve also seen a lot of companies shift to explicitly state 35, meaning they don’t have to pay you for breaks (amongst other things)
I do 8 hour days, with some wiggle room if things go a little over. In 2.5 years no one has ever questioned this
I do a flat day rate of what a fulltime annual salary is, divided by 125.
If a client insists on hourly, the day rate is divided by 10 for 10-hour days (i.e. a 50-hour week) but I keep my actuals as close to 8-hour days as possible.
The $1800 rate is resting right on the low end of the CD range. I’m noticing freelance rates across the board have remained stagnant the past couple years despite high inflation. It doesn’t mean it’s right, it means they’re underpaying.
You might have to take on a mixture of high- and lower-rate gigs. Freelancing as a CD doing actual CD stuff is rare.
Personally I don’t even think about hours. A day is as long as it takes and your day rate should reflect that. Working on this basis is a mindset thing for both consultant and client.
