It’s really not as exciting or as “intense” as you’re imagining. Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend going more than once.
As a private citizen, you’ll be watching the inauguration from the Washington Monument (about a mile from the White House) so you’ll be seeing everything on a jumbo tron. After the inauguration, you’ll walk over to one of the avenues (I forget which one- maybe Pennsylvania?) to watch the motorcade. The bulletproof glass on all of the vehicles is so thick you can barely make out who is in each of the limos. Then it’s over.
But if you do go, make an event out of it, maybe 3 nights. The city is very alive and there are tourists everywhere. Staying in Rosslyn is the best bet for an affordable hotel. Stay in DC in a more expensive but more fun hotel. The Smithsonian museums are free and fun but, because of all the tourists, the lines are really long.
Thank you for the helpful information!
If you’re going to go book soon. Checked a dozen hotels today and all sold out. Even the Trump International lol
Plan now is all that I can recommend. If you have friends in DC, I'd call them to see if you could stay with them while also checking hotels and Airbnb.
I don't know which service line you're in but you could ping a PPD from any of the DC metro offices who might have connections to inaugural events. Just a recommendation
