Toronto ad fish 🤠 I’ve spent most of my career working as a copywriter in London (6 years here, 2 years Toronto) and the market is pretty different here. I’m planning on moving back home but wondered….how do you find work in Toronto? Agencies barely post openings, is the recruiter scene strong? Is it mostly who you know?

I’m in-house and having a wildly different experience than the poster above. All we do is bigger thinking brand stunts, fun OOH and reactive work. Our design team handles the day to day social and reformatting of global materials. My hours are pretty much exactly 9-5. It’s rare if I have to work late or on anything over the weekend and I’m making 50k more than I was agency side.
Which in house is this?
I work in-house. If you like the work you produce in the agency world, you probably wouldn't like in-house. There is a lot of bill paying type work and little to no bigger brand work depending on the company. That said, the work life balance and attitudes are leagues better. For me it has been worth it. We still get to do fun creative work, just usually with a miniscule budget, and definitely no money to submit anything for awards to show our agency friends it's possible to do good work in-house sometimes.
As a writer, it's MUCH easier to get better copy approved because it's basically me and one brand person making the decisions.
So yeah go freelance
I kind of fell into it at the time. Was agency side for a decade and then the last one I was at was shut down by the parent company. My CD got me an interview as the lead writer for a company with a big in house creative department. I have bounced to a few since then. These days I see a fair number of in house roles posted on LinkedIn. The interview process was pretty similar agency side. Showed my portfolio etc etc.
