If I dislike M&A in biglaw, would I also dislike it for in house? I enjoy some aspects, like high-level strategy and the variety of work (i.e., it's not negotiating the same contract over and over, and there's always different ancillaries involved). But I'm starting to think I don't care for deal work, business development, or the finance-related components. It's all so abstract. Moreover, I think "So what if we close a successful deal. The company's shareholders make more money, but I don't."

Generally speaking, in-house M&A work is going to be front end due diligence and post close integration (eg identifying key contracts, risks, novation, etc). Most of the heavy lifting for legal will likely be handled by outside counsel.

@VP are you also in M&A? If so, are you glad you stuck with it or do you wish you were doing something else?

Ugh I wanted to take my son to see a UFC match in person. Just so happens there is one in November at Madison Square Garden - great right! I knew the tickets would be expensive, was willing to pay $400 to $500 a ticket as long as they were decent. The cheapest ticket in the whole arena, basically top row so you can’t see crap, is $506 before you start with the fees!!! Am I wrong or is that just bananas???? Oh well, pay per view it is, maybe have some friends over. Just complaining… happy Friday!

Very specific to retail and/or hospitality in-house roles: has anyone found a good solution for predictive scheduling? Our retail division has one set of software for scheduling and one for payroll, and neither of them can handle predictive scheduling compliance issues unless they’re used for both the scheduling and payroll functions. I’m coming up empty on ideas for them to bridge the gap, but I’m also new to my compliance counsel role, so I would be overjoyed if anyone has suggestions.

Got another perm offer in a different industry for similar salary, but I might have to relocate and I'm concerned the work may involve translation instead of pure legal work.
