When you have that awesome and generous informational interview with Steve Silver from Goodby while visiting SF from NJ in 1996, don't just say thank you and goodbye, find out what it would take to get an internship. Do not accept a no. Do whatever that would require. ASK!!!
That, or go pitch a tent at Weiden and clean their toilets if you had to.
I wasted my junior years at shitty no name agencies where I was worked just as hard and for as long hours as anybody, except for hacks and charlatans instead of talented CDs. I'm a self-unmade man.
Since I did exactly what Art Director 2 did, I would tell my younger self to do the exact opposite, in order to avoid waking up one day in oppressive debt. Live within what you're making today, and use credit as a last resort.
I would recommend that younger, under 30 me start cramming money into 401k & Roth IRA.
I would also tell myself to explore other opportunities outside advertising, and spend disposable income on travel rather than booze. There's a lot of really cool shit out there professionally, and in the world in general.
take care of your physical and mental health above ALL else
GOD DAMMIT ACCOUNT DIRECTOR 1 I SAID ADVICE TO YOURSELF NOT ME
Blaze all day.
Find and draw your worth and confidence from within, and never rely on external sources for it. Know your worth and, if and when it’s not being recognized (or you grow out of your current opportunity), move on to something that excites or terrifies you. Business is business; despite feelings of loyalty, your company is out to protect their own best interests and the bottom line, not your best interests
OP, I'm very clear on what you said and that's what I've answered.
I'd say *to myself* ... was implied
GOD DAMMIT TRY TO FOLLOW
Live like you’ll make more money soon enough. Don’t skip out on opportunities or good living situations because you can’t afford them (within reason) get some credit and use it
On shoots, always think about what you need to get “your version” of the spot or video. No one will remember the average thing you produced but if you have a good version it will help you
It’s just advertising. Don’t get hot under the collar about a cereal spot. Know when to fall in your sword. Appreciate everyone
Bitcoin. Get lots of it.
Take a lateral move to digital vs. a promotion in traditional media planning
Avoid Tyler Perry movies altogether... they don’t get better, they only get worse.
^ Are you my real life friend to whom this just happened??:)
OP, I'd say talk to as many senior and learn from as many senior people as you can and take on more risks to learn faster.
Pay closer attention to everything. Especially the stuff you don't like, like post production. You need to know it.
Get close with your CDs. Watch them, ask them questions, use them to learn the business, not just the creative.
“You need to invent this thing called Facebook. See, how it works is..."
Only work for CDs and ECDs who have a similar taste to yours + more experience + balls. This way you’ll become the best version of yourself and not a mediocre version of a creative you never wanted to be in the first place. Working under someone whose views on what a good ad looks like are different to yours, will only bring you pain.
Learn how to present. Take a class. Read more books. If an idea works better as a side project do it as a side project don’t expect your client to pay for it. Be relevant. Start your day by reading a newspaper. Don’t leave NYC.
Get an idea, start your own business. Commit.
