It's only not appropriate if she/he works for the competition. If you trust her/his insights no matter what he/she does. Go for it.
I trust my own instinct. But, if your SO is the target market and you doubt your gut, I guess you could ask them...if you think they’ll be honest and you honestly value their opinion.
When a client is close to approving work, but at the last minute kills an idea because they showed it to a sixth cousin twice removed who may deem something inappropriate or offensive.
It doesn’t bring the idea back to life, but it gives me peace when my SO confirms the client and their source are crazy.
