We hired our VP of Acq/Inv. from a CMBS trading role. Depending on what market you are in I’d say just excel in your role, network or get some further education and you shouldn’t have a problem. What city and what product type? Feel free to DM me
Yeah, my plan is to stay at least two years, really get into the weeds and master it. Then go to b school, and pivot to buyside property level work potentially (equity only). I’ve noticed with anything in life, I’m more passionate when I have real skin in the game.
I think there’s definitely some carryover. You have to build your CRE knowledge toolkit over time. Starting with big picture finance and secondary markets is probably advantageous as opposed to starting on a property level at a principal firm.
I’d assume that your move to the principal side will eventually be to a firm that is exclusively in multifamily, which really isn’t a bad place to be. You can’t learn everything there is about real estate without mastering individual aspects, so soak this finance experience in and enjoy the ride. Use down time to research the particulars of the next role you see yourself pursuing.
