I've done litigation for 23 years and could never imagine doing anything else.
Mentor
I've been in the field for almost 25 years with the majority of that time in-house in small legal departments. One stint in a firm at the beginning of my career, which was absolutely wonderful, and another 6 month stint after being laid off due to acquisition. That second stint was in a firm so toxic I vowed to leave the field before ever returning to a firm. It truly was that particular firm and by no means is an indication of other firms, but the experience was really THAT horrible.
I love the ability to learn new things in a small in-house legal department with two days rarely the same. You have to jump in and help wherever you're needed and learn new areas of the company and/or law. I've been responsible for training, billing, litigation, labor & employment, service of process, corporate governance, EDGAR filings, trademarks, contracts, compliance, and even a little IT.
I’ve been in estate planning and probate for nearly a decade and still really enjoy it. It’s not as high-stress as litigation, and I’ve found the work-life balance to be better than other areas I’ve dabbled in. Plus, the clients tend to be appreciative, which is nice!
I’ve been in intellectual property litigation for ten years and love it. What kind of law interests you? That’s where you should look.
I’ve been a Fam Law Paralegal for over 15 yrs and I love what I do. I’m actually going to law school this fall and planning on being a Fam Law Attorney.
I’ve been in the legal field since 2007 and I’ve crossed over from personal injury and social security disability to securities law, then to probate. I absolutely love probate. It’s low stress and the attorneys in this field are much happier individuals from my experience. I highly recommend looking into probate, trust and estates.
I’ve been in intellectual property law (pros) for over 40 years. It has been a terrific field of law. I’ve been involved in a variety of its aspects… patent and tm prosecution, some litigation, copyrights and a great deal of docketing (a fav). I’ve worked in both in-house roles and in law firms, plus ran my own IP company for 18 years taking on a variety of IP projects for all kinds of clients. I enjoy working with IP attorneys (engineer types mostly) and like most areas of law, it is very specialized and detailed. It’s a great field.
