Advice I got my first year was "get organized." Good advice, but not very helpful.
Folder organization is key. Rename support to what it is related to (2 - payroll je, etc), and put in a folder with similar items (client -> interim -> walkthroughs -> payroll -> salary). Always box/highlight/recalculate things in the support for ease of senior review.
Find a way that works for you obviously. But when your manager or senior asks for support and you need 5 minutes to find something, it's embarrassing.
Agree with EY 1. As a staff 1 we won’t expect you to have a lot of technical knowledge or know how to test workpapers so the best way to contribute is through a lot of soft skill type things like staying organized, managing your time well, keeping a positive attitude, volunteering to help your seniors in any way you can.
Agree with EY1. Here’s my 0.02:
1) Be a team player. Show up on time and support your seniors in whatever they need
2) Own your task. Whatever it is. Whether it be tieing out statements or ordering dinner. Understand that everyone starts somewhere so do your best job at whatever it is. Take everything from START to FINISH.
3) Be a sponge. Absorb as much knowledge as you can be asking questions. Understand the WHY to everything that you do. Soon enough you’ll be explaining these tasks to someone else.
6 words. Don’t. Mess. Up. The. Dinner. Order.
Other advice seems pretty good too
Ask questions. You’re expected to at this level, and the higher you go the harder it is to ask the dumb questions. Having a positive attitude is good too. There’s nothing more annoying than a staff 1 who thinks a task is below them. Or a staff who only does the bare minimum (not asking to help or avoiding work).
Accept that you will be wrong more often than not. It's all about learning and every level has a learning curve.
Organization, Time management, and making sure to complete things in a timely manner.
Thank you to everyone! I really appreciate the advice. I will def keep all these things in mind.
Take and save a lot of notes. Make lists of questions and ask your senior all at once instead of every five seconds. Be pleasant
