I’m considering lateraling to Dentons’ NY office as a fourth year, potentially coming in at market pay. While I know their compensation structure can be a bit of a black box, does anyone know if they typically give raises to keep lateral hires at market if they come in at market? Any insight would be appreciated!

I’ve heard their salary increases are like $5K a year, despite what salary you come in at. Avoid.

I know people at Dentons who definitely get much higher raises than that…

You should negotiate guaranteed market raises if you hit your hours otherwise assume it won’t happen. In general, these are totally appropriate questions to ask Dentons during the process.

It is not something the firm would guarantee. Used to work there.

The general rule is that if you hit your hours each year you’ll make whatever the market salary is for your city at your year level. However this is just the usual practice, and not a rule, so every year around this time you’ll be wondering if you’ll be bumped up to market comp. There are also other factors besides hours that the firm may use (e.g., practice group profitability, overall quality of work product, etc.) to adjust your comp.

Bonuses can often be market but are subject to much more volatility every year regardless of whether you hit your hours.

Thanks for any insights.

Anybody have experience with adjournment requests in the 1st Dept App Division? We have a respondent’s brief due a week from Wednesday. This past we submitted an application for adjournment. I’ve convinced my partner that we have good cause (record issues that need a motion to resolve) but now I’m starting to get worried. Are adjournments usually granted?

Does anyone know if this is normal? I joined a vault 100 firm in September last year. The firm put me on tier 7. In January I had the associate review and everything was normal. After a couple of weeks, I got the call from the hiring partner telling my bonus and new salary (because of the firm-wide salary increase). I realized I still get paid as a 7 year associate. The partner said because I joined the firm later in the year, it’s normal not to advance in the next year. Is it? Thanks!

I have been at my current firm for about 1.5 years, and in that entire time the partner in my group hasn't been out of the office a single time. Is that normal? I can't tell if it's standard for big law partners to not take time off, if the dynamics for my group may be different (only 1 partner in the entire group), or it the partner I work with is just a masochist.
