I have been a data analyst for three years. I’ve got advanced Excel skills and R Programming skills, intermediate SQL skills and recently completed Datacamp’s intermediate Python course. Leave. This firm is playing you.
Don't leave. Use the your leverage to say that you disagree, it wasn't in your offer and you didn't expect it. If that was the firm's plan, they should have made it clearer earlier. You can tell them you understand this is not customary.
Thank you all. Very helpful. I just don’t know if it’s the firm’s policy or it is only for me. Neither is good but I would like to know the reason if it’s just to me.
If this is Loeb, they do this to other people too. They are extremely stingy and make excuses to not pay more/market while the partners are still raking in cash.
Check your offer letter - if they don’t promote you until the following year if you join after a certain point, it should state it in your offer
Thank you. It was not mentioned in my offer letter. My offer letter only said I was put in tier 7. That’s why I assumed I would go to tier 8 this year.
Doesn’t sound normal to me. I joined a new firm as a second year in the fall and my salary was bumped to third year in January.
You’re getting jipped. If they wanted to hold back your class year, they should have negotiated that with your offer, in which case you would have probably never agreed to lateral
Same thing happened to me..not normal and made me angry
I have it all in writing if i do wanna do something about it, but for now I’m looking for a new position
Lots of good points on here. Run if they are just screwing you. I worked at a big law firm that announced a policy of not providing written salary confirmation or a pay scale memo at an associates meeting. Unfortunately they forgot to consult the labor and employment group (the policy was illegal in half our offices). I should have ran, but the litigation market wasn’t as good as it is now.
Thank you all. I was frustrated. I emailed to the partner and asked him if I can do anything to advance my tier. He said he will call me about a few thoughts. Several weeks passed and he hasn’t called me yet. More importantly, no one mentioned it in my review in January. Any way to resolve it? Should I follow up with the partner and request to schedule a call. My husband suggested me letting it go, but I really want an answer. Or should I talk with my mentor? Not sure if it is a good idea to talk internally.
If it’s been several weeks and you were promised a call back, you should feel confident following up imo
Did you hit your prorated hours goals? Was there a practice shift or any reason to think that you’re not on par with your class year peers?
Definitely not normal and is understandably upsetting. Talking it through to them and arguing on your own behalf is the right thing to do and hopefully they realize the error in treatment.
I hit the goal and got my bonus. My review was exceeding expectations and they said I did well. I will follow up with the partner.
You guys are hot right now. My firm’s handbook specifically mentions if you lateral past a certain point in the year you’re not raise eligible except in extraordinary circumstances.
This is atypical. Top firms are generally happy to reward a job well done, not pinch pennies.
