Just keep interviewing? I don’t understand what the problem is. 4+ weeks is a pretty short timeline to invest anyway. I went through 5-10 final rounds (case studies, panel presentations, etc.) to receive a single offer over the course of several months in 2024. Same with 2021. And in 2019. And in 2016. Each year for a new job or industry.
I had a very similar experience last year. Final round, paused on another role I wasn’t as excited about… and then: rejection. What helped me bounce back was staying in touch with that hiring manager. Six months later, she reached out with a new opportunity, and that one worked out. Stay open. You never know.
I'm really sorry about that, it is so devastating when you get so close to something you want and it doesn't work out. All you can do is keep going. Open your heart to the right opportunity and it will find you. You never know what could've happened if it actually worked out, it could've been an entirely wrong fit for you.
Do you know why you got rejected?
The first time I applied to Google I made it to the very end of the recruitment process but I wasn't good enough on the technical side. The rest of their feedback was really good. So I worked on my technical skills for 4 months and contacted the recruiting manager again. They offered me another technical interview and I got in. 😊
It might just not be the right time for you? The fact that you made it all this way shows they were interested!
There's just no getting around it, that type of rejection is hard. Especially considering how involved the hiring processes have gotten. I think it's good to keep in mind, just for future reference, that nothing is final until it's final. So it's good to consider something to be a dream job, and to have positive thoughts about it. But just be prepared to know that you came up short in the competition. And that's really what happens, it's all a competition and you may get edged out by someone else. When it happened to me I just resolved to stay confident and make sure next time around, I'd edge out the other candidates. That's all we can do!
Didn’t even know much about the company until I started the interview process. Ended up getting really excited and everything sounded like such a good fit. After 3 interviews I got the rejection message and I was crushed! It helped when friends said it wasn’t so bad if I at least got far in the process, with time I started to agree, even though at first that felt worse!
Firstly, well done on getting to the final stage in the process for your dream job. It hurts now, but this is an achievement in itself.
I started in recruitment, sold cloud (corporate thru enterprise), then returned to recruitment.
Firstly, if the other offer that you put on pause isn’t it, you need to keep going - don’t settle.
The connections you have made throughout this process are valuable. Connect with them in a meaningful way - what did you learn about them? Are there any introductions that you can facilitate? What feedback can each individual give to you?
For now, try to put your feelings aside and think of this as a sales process. Given your late stage achievement, it could be a ‘not now’ rather than a no. Why is this? Do you know?
Take a minute to grieve for what could have been. Then collate. Look at it with a high-focus lens, removing the emotion. What made this the dream job? Does this exist in other companies? If the answer is yes, you know what to do! If no, you review, improve and go again.
Ya, I've had that happen before. I was PERFECT for this job, had all the education, experience EVERYTHING. The manager ended up hiring his fellow IT colleague for the role. I'm like if you wanted an IT guy, why didn't you ADVERTISE for an IT guy? It crushed my soul and it still hurts thinking about it.

So sorry! I have been through something similar. Give yourself time.
That’s happened to me twice just in the last 3 months where the 4th interview was the company flying me out to their home office to tour and meet the staff. One of them ghosted me back in March and then one was a rejection last week. Both processes took about a month. Both companies were recruiting me. I didn’t know much about them.
It’s so hard not to take it personally, and I don’t really know if it was personal or not in my case Because you can never know. I don’t think there’s any way around feeling bad about it though especially if you were excited it’s hard not to get excited if it seems like a great opportunity because you probably started picturing your future there.
You never know what’s going on internally at the company though and I’ve seen way worse things happen to other people, especially if they’re asked to do projects and they get their work stolen instead of a job offer.
HOWEVER, sounds like you’re doing a great job interviewing and I’m so happy for you that you have that other offer. I definitely don’t think you did anything wrong here though. I think it was something they had going on, that you don’t know anything about. These kinds of behaviors have become sadly normal for companies in the last two years.

I hate that this happened to you but I hope that you find out one day soon why this didn’t work out because you land somewhere amazing that’s truly aligned for you.
