My experience is that being good leads to worse WLB and way more work being put on your plate . But also that the pay/promotions are better to match. Which one is more important to you is a personal choice.
Throughout my career I’ve been promoted at 2-3x the speed as others and have generally made 20-40% more than my peers at each level. However, I’ve also been ladened with 2-3x the workload and significantly higher expectations/responsibilities/knowledge and skill requirements to where the equation of: Reward / Effort is not much different than everyone else.
Said another way: working 40 hours per week for $150K is the same rate of return as working 80 hours per week for $300K. Which job would you rather have? Different people will have different answers, and may even change their answer depending on their phase in life
If the raises and promotions were in line with the workload this would be different but that has not been the case in my career. I have been burdened with the extra work without the extra pay which has been a tough pill to swallow. To Tax Managing Director's comment, that has been the case. They save money underpaying me and then eat those savings immediately when trying to replace me when I eventually leave.
Same. I have to quit to ease the load then am replaced with 2-3 people

How’s your salary, and did you ever get laid off?
KPMG 1, I know right?! One of the most frustrating things about the current remote job market is that so many companies low ball you if you don't live in a major metro with a higher COL. I am doing the same role, why am I shafted so much just because I choose to live somewhere more affordable? Current boss/managing partner just hired another person in a similar role to me (larger client in a specific industry) and is paying them over 50% more! I was already in full job search mode but that certainly didn't help the situation. ha
Yup, same here too.
