I’m curious whether people would accept slightly lower pay for a genuinely healthier culture. A bad environment can make good compensation feel less valuable.

What would you trade for peace of mind at work?

Yes, hands down, especially the older you get. Toxic work culture has an impact on your mental health, which will impact your physical health - especially in the long-run

This exact thing. I work in a very toxic environment. You can do it for a few years, but eventually your physical health will be impacted because of the toll on your mental health.

When I was younger I could deal with it. But now that I am older I’m finding happiness and life balance to be a far better focus of my energy.

Work is just what you do to get paid. It can be noble and fulfilling or just a 9-5. Your life outside of work is really what matters, and it’s a lot harder to enjoy if you’re stressed to the max and physically impacted by it.

Absolutely. I moved jobs from a small bank to TD Bank because I hit the ceiling at the small bank and TD was paying better. The only time I was happy at TD was my first month, when they sent us to training, and the days when the person I reported to was off. No matter what you did, you were always wrong. No coaching, no "hey, let me show you," and no sense of feeling appreciated for my previous experience. Because she was the manager, it was her way or the highway. After a while, I reported her to HR for toxic work environment and again about a month later for attacking my character. She found out it was me who reported her and she attempted to write me up one day for wearing a smart watch, which she's seen me wear every single day I went into the office. She tried to get me to sign off on being written up and, when I showed her the policy and how it never mentioned you could not wear a smart watch, she wrote me up again for insubordination. I got tipped off I was gonna get let go from HR and quit on the spot before they could fire me. I returned my key and told her she'll be hearing from my lawyer.

Fast forward a month later and I started at a different bank and have never been happier there, even though I make less money than I did at TD Bank. That lesson taught me that more money does not make someone happier, especially if you're loathing having to go into the office every day.

I love to think I would. But no

I think i could deal with a whole lot before i took a pay cut. Things would have to get pretty bad

YES, look at my employer! Toxic af! Culture reverted back overnight right after asset cap was lifted.

They meet their objectives simply by asking questions… that’s all… no pressure like it used to be… idk if you worked for the firm pre ‘16… but it’s like night and day

Depends on what you define as slightly… 1-3% reduction, sure.,. 4-7%, maybe but other factors would come top of mind like flexibility… >8%, no shot…

I did. Left a private sector job making the most money I’d ever made and left taking a local government job on a smaller team making less money but not hating everything about everything. That part is nice.

Would it look bad on my resume?

I am sure this is a question with an obvious answer, but does anyone else just feel absolutely trapped in a job they hate because of their student loans? I’m three years out of law school and I still have $160K in student debt despite making aggressive payments. I work in a larger firm (not big law per se, but 250+ attorneys and big for the market). I am pretty unhappy with my job the vast majority of the time, but I feel like I have no options. $160k at 6% and 7% interest cannot be ignored.
