I would personally just stick with what you're doing. You'll have transferable skills, just focus on those. I agree, an internship sounds like a pretty substantial step backwards since you're already in the working world.
The Big 4 lost age discrimination cases due to hiring only on campus. So in response you now see all kinds of LinkedIn In job postings. Not sure how serious those are but that is one option if you are not recruited on campus.
Stick to what you are doing! There are transferable skills and showing work ethic is important. You can speak to the fact that you developed an interest in tax and wanted to pursue a career in that. No harm applying to entry level jobs to see what happens but internships won’t necessarily be better. Your masters program should also have ways to develop employment connections and you should try to network through that
