Keep the secret if you are concerned about it. I would give them some kind of notice when it gets close to time, but generally speaking, you don’t owe it to explain early on. Especially if you are worried about being passed over because of it.
I wish we didn't have to feel this way in the workplace anymore, but I totally felt the same last year when I had to announce my own pregnancy. It's not wrong to keep it a secret, technically there's no legal requirement to tell them. But I think if you want maternity leave, you'll want to tell them sooner than later so you can arrange for time off. I would probably tell them no later than 6 months.
Women shouldn't have to feel this way, but I understand that what should happen and what does are different. I'm sorry you have to deal with that injustice.
You don't really owe anybody information about your private life, but will you be able to stick it out to see the project through? Will the stress of it impact your health? I'm less worried about your job than I am about your well-being!
I say keep it a secret , when you are ready to disclose that information you can however you do not owe your employer an explanation into your personal life. I have a coworker that kept her pregnancy a secret up until recently , She didn't tell until recently that she was 8 months pregnant.
It's not unethical, and it's none of your employer's business that you're pregnant. Keep your secret as long as you think you need to.
