I’m helping a couple local companies with their websites on the side of my day job. Anyone actually build their side hustle into their full time job? When do you know it’s ok to leave your day job?

When you can feel like you can live off the salary and have consistent gigs

I have been working my side hustle and trying to build it into a full-time gig. I would really love to just do that full-time rather than what I actually do full-time. I keep growing, so I am hoping by the end of 2026 it will be my full-time gig.

It’s good you’re doing this. I honestly feel like when the time is right. You’ll know it

OP: Hard to say without more background. What kind of companies? B2B or consumer facing? Brick and mortar, or e-commerce? What sort of help are you giving them? Design, content creation, backend development? Did you build the sites from scratch or are you using an existing platform? Do they need you on an ongoing basis and if not, how will you grow your client base? Share links!

How much revenue is this bringing in? Do they need you on an ongoing basis? If not, how will you grow your client base? Are you doing door to door sales or are they coming to you? This is all super vague if you’re asking for a real answer..

I think just keep investing as much time into it as possible, and once it outpaces your day job and seems to be sustainable enough, I think that would be a good time to quite the 9 to 5.

The number people use is three months of runway, but the real signal is whether your side income is growing without you actively selling — that means you have something with pull, not just projects. The scariest part isn't the leap, it's leaving before the pipeline is real. Two clients isn't a business; it's a slow layoff waiting to happen. The move makes sense when you're turning work down or when your day job is actively limiting what you can take on. For website work specifically, the inflection point is usually when retainer clients (maintenance, SEO, updates) start stacking — that's recurring revenue, which changes the math entirely. Has anyone made the jump and wish they'd waited longer — or gone sooner?

So interesting. Can you elaborate?

Hi. I am a Transition teacher in California. I would like to know what is the ratio of students to staff for community outings in your districts? I have been teaching in my district for 20+ years and it has always been 4:1 ratio for our moderate/severe transition classes. Now our director is saying it's 6:1 and I don't feel like this is safe for our students.

Recently, the CEO and my boss, the VP gave me the latitude to promote myself and "write my own" job description. I've been the Marketing Manager of this company for about 7 months. Already received 1 raise.

Much of the work in my "new" job description, I've already been doing. My currently salary is $70K. New title is Director of Communications and Systems Integration. What is a reasonable salary increase here.

I have about 7 years experience in this area.
