I’m in the interview process for a new in-house role and just discovered that I am pregnant. I know the conventional wisdom is to accept an offer before disclosing, but I am worried about a negative response from my new manager and I would rather know upfront if this is an issue before accepting the offer. Would it be a bad idea to disclose this if I receive an offer? What is the best way to handle this?

Disclosing is how you get the negative response by...not being hired. They'll "find another fit" etc ....

Don’t disclose it yet but ask about benefits package before accepting, and check if there’s a minimum time for parental leave to kick in (we have one year in my company). Otherwise, you might have to take unpaid FMLA if that’s available, or a shorter unpaid period. You’d still have 7-ish months ideally at the job, but companies aren’t crazy about hiring someone they’ll lose for a bit.

Also get to know the values of your colleagues if you can, do they value family time? If there’s a good WLB culture and colleagues have families, they’re more likely to be understanding as long as you do a great job for the months you’ll be there and leave a good path (processes, resources to help streamline coverage, etc) for your absence. We’ve had that happen a couple time in our team and everyone was fine with it because our culture is very much family first. But I know that’s not the norm.

Do not disclose

like

Do not disclose this. You are not under obligation to disclose. This could impact you in the interview process.

We just hired someone pregnant and she disclosed after offer to negotiate leave eligibility. We provided full leave and hired her anyway.

like

This is the move.

If their response to your pregnancy (and how they treat moms of littles generally) is determinative in whether you want to work there, and/or if you absolutely must have a paid maternity leave, disclose now and have a frank discussion. Let them know you just found out.

If you'd want to work there regardless, and you're ok with an unpaid leave if that's what it comes to, then don't disclose.

like

Or: wait until you get an offer, then accept. Then disclose before actually giving notice to your current firm, so you can gauge the new employer's response and get info on what kind of maternity leave you'll have.

like

I think it depends how far you are when the offer comes

like

If you’re in your first trimester I wouldn’t. If you have to disclose later, it’s understandable given the risks. Only exception would be if you get an offer and there’s no way to take leave, then you can negotiate
