I'm looking for innovative ways to get my students to "publish" their writing. I've scoured the internet and know all of the basic ways - and have tried lots - but am looking for something more exclusive to our grade or class they can look forward to at the end of the year. I have lots of ideas, but would love to hear about what has worked for other middle school ELA classes. Thanks!

Also, there are National writing competitions every month. I’ve encourage my kids to send their work to ZizzleLit, NewMoonGirls, StoneSoup, Storgy, etc. there are tons of digital journals, magazines, and competitions to find. I’m a 7th grade ELA teacher, and due to the change in environment this year, I’ve shifted my course to be about 80% writing focus. This has been the best year of student writing for me. Good luck!

Thanks, Texas High School; I really appreciate it. Your blog is marvelous and a wonderful idea. Your kids are lucky - and I'm excited to try your suggestions!

You may want to create a digital literary magazine for your grade or school. It can take the form of a google doc or slides or whatever platform you used. Students can help edit and it can be done virtually. I read the Texas teacher’s blog as well. Great! Good luck.

How do you engage your students in more reading outside of what is required in the classroom? With each passing year I am finding an ever shrinking population of students, including honors students, who actually read beyond what is posted in social media or video games. Students willingly volunteer that they do not read and most parents see it as a non-issue. I tell my students that the best readers are usually the best writers. What are some strategies that you use beyond reading logs ?

I have high school children of my own, but disciplining high schoolers has always intimidated me for some reason. I have excellent classroom management, but I feel like high schoolers are a little smarter ab getting around rules and less worried about consequences.

I’m told by an hs tchr that the grading load is ab the same.
