I am looking for two new teachers (0-5 years) who would be interested in participating in a study I am doing as a Doctoral Candidate at Baylor. The study looks to understand the experiences women working in the field of education have had that triggered shame and explore their resilience. I am not in 11th, but 10th. However, we take the EOC as sophomores.
We have an infographic and grade sample papers from past EOC’s. I don’t spend too much time on it, to be honest. We have gone over writing a lot and they should be okay without over focusing on a test. It’s my fifth year teaching this and last year only one students did not score proficient or above in my course. He was one question off. (I teach advanced so it is certainly not because of me. My kids are genuinely fairly capable of writing)
You may not agree with my POV, but I am sure to tell them that “Blended writing is a fancy made up term by those in charge to make it seem like they’re doing something. Blended writing is really just writing. It’s almost impossible to write a paper without a mixture of information and argumentative traits. You all already do it, so do not get freaked out by fancy wording. What they call blended writing, we call writing. Just write the essay as we have practiced before.”
I also tell them that if they start the essay with a narrative the intelligent powers that be absolutely love that.
Ours do one last practice essay with the focus on required elements.
Someone had better give thought to the grammar test they’ve added to ours. The format is funky.
In my district we have the students practice writing constructed responses and full length writings, whether informational, argumentative or narratives every week. Basically every time a new text is introduced they are guaranteed to have a discussion, a short timed writing, and a timed full length writing to help build their writing stamina.
Prepare them by ensuring that you show them sample responses and give them timed opportunities to write in class so they could practice their skills. Review it with them and ensure they comprehend the strategies.
