All American Boys is REALLY spot on with how it approaches police brutality, family, and race from a teenage perspective.
For background: there are two narratives in the book. One is a black male who gets brutally attacked by an officer. One is a white male who witnesses the attack.
The reaction of the school and neighborhood is very realistic, the characterization is genuine, and the book sparked great concentrations and writing assignments.
I’d like to know this as well as books about other races that are well-written, that aren’t simplistic, and have excellent literary merit. It’s that last one that has proven a major stumbling block.
not sure about the literary merit part, but as far as high-interest books about other races/cultures with a message: The Poet X, My Family Divided, Refugee, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian
