I’m relocating to London and would love to hear recommendations on neighborhoods. I am looking for an “urban village” feel (small coffee shops, not very touristy, can walk a dog and stroller) with a budget of 3K for a 1-2 bdr. My commute would be into Soho. I am currently looking at Notting Hill, Chelsea, and St John Woods, but I won’t be able to visit before my move. Any neighborhood recs?

St John's Wood is top-notch. Great choice.

Some options south of the river - Blackheath or Wimbledon Village or Dulwich Village. All very nice

Putney!

like

Notting Hill without hesitation

like

Hampstead High Street

like

Kensington Church Street area too. I prefer more East London vibes though around Spitalfields Market.

Haven't seen Herne Hill here yet - villagey, crafty, markets, great park and views, walking distance to Brixton (possibly a touch long for a regular commute though). Possible downside might be the lack of tube (has a decent enough train line) depending on what you need.

like

Barnes? Greenwich? Blackheath? All lovely and not at all dreadful despite being south of the river.

100 percent herne hill. coffee shops and village vibe. Short walk to Brixton tube station which can get you to Soho asap. Great for dogs.

Thank you all for the comments and recommendations. I will consider removing Notting Hill from my list and also looking up some of the other neighborhoods. I believe my original list focused more on central and NW London, so I do appreciate recommendations outside of those regions and I plan to explore all of London once I arrive. From what I can tell, London is a beautiful city with an amazing diverse population, and I hope to contribute to the city as I consider making this relocation a permanent move. Also additional context on me: moving with two small pets and my wife who is currently taking a sabbatical from her digital start up.

Agreed - in Putney you have Wandsworth Park, Bishops Park, Putney Heath, Wimbledon Common, Richmond Park and the Wetlands Centre all in walking distance!

Chiswick

Also depends if you have family, school needs, friends nearby, do you want be near office, etc..

Given you mention stroller, you should add school as an important element to your search criteria

At your budget, you can afford private school (which ironically is called public school
In England)
If you want to do state school, the neighbourhood search would be quite different

Also remember to factor in price of nursery into this - more expensive areas = more expensive nursery fees. Cheapest probably £1200 a month for full time nursery, more expensive = £2800+ a month. And obviously nanny more expensive. This is pre funding.

Clerkenwell

Cutty Sark? (Might be a bit touristy but I don’t know how many tourists hit it up realistically as it’s a little bit hidden).

Also I second Barnes for that budget - might bump into Gordon Ramsey but you’ll be struggling for a tube because there are none 🙃

Wimbledon may also have the nice village feel? + has a tube (albeit the district line forever delayed) and a tram + rail connections to Waterloo.

Dulwhich Village may be worth a look. But I’m not too sure on transport connections - it’s a bit out of the way.
