Remember it’s just a job! Not a measure of your worth

In this vein, don’t beat yourself up if it’s harder than expected or simply not the right fit for you in the end. It has nothing to do with you, it’s about finding the best place for you.

Who the hell said I wanted to leave the job anyway what are yall smoking

Most of us internalize mental health issues, especially men. I did. But after 45 years of practice, one case broke me. It was good to talk about it. My wife, also an attorney, was very supportive and walked me off the ledge. 5 years of my life, very agressive and abusive litigation strategy by my opponent. My life was threatened by one member of the board of the company I represented. I won at every stage which was gratifying. I managed to break new ground in creating a new standard for maritime subject matter jurisdiction. but it was a painful process. Defense firms imposed on law schools in the middle of appeals to the 5th circuit to write law review articles favoring the opposition’s position. I’m proud of what I did but it probably shortened my life. If I knew when I signed on to the case what I know now, I would have never taken it. No human being should be exposed to that level of stress— threats, waking up in the middle of the night because you suddenly dream of a new strategy, etc. Get help early.

How did your first day back go?

I don’t know ask your partners who ignored me when I offered to come back even after you slammed phone shut between my mate and I

Congratulations on feeling well enough to return to work. It’s heartening that your firm provided a two-month leave (I hope it was paid!) for you to receive treatment. I wish you the best. And, trust yourself. If you need more time to heal - in order to be strong enough to provide the firm your best and enduring lawyering, trust what you need to do to make that happen. If the firm won’t, at this point, commit to fostering what needs to happen for you to do your best lawyering, you likely need to take a pass. You may or may not be a lawyer for the rest of your life, AND you sure are NOT committed to this firm for the rest of your life.

likehelpful

Try my commitment without slamming the phone shut between my mate and I how committed will you be when you can’t even communicate on the phone with your wife

Best of luck! You got this and we are here to support you!

likehelpful

Best of luck! How you’re treated will show what people are really like. Though I don’t know what led you to treatment, it when I came back after 30 gays to my company after drug and alcohol rehab (the booze and coke got out of control) everyone who worked with me and for me was very supportive. It showed me a lot about people. I also tried to keep rehab/detox a secret, but you can’t. One important thing was to be very frank about it without sounding defensive. I’m actually humorous about it. But, depending on your comfort level, but some sort of platitudinous but not obviously false story might be something to think about. But, in reality, good for you for getting the treatment you needed!

Transactional associate. Lateraled 6 months ago and one of the biggest pain points has been my new firm’s inclination to “hop on a call”, which of course requires every single stakeholder to join. The end result being every call has 25 people on it and nothing actually gets done because no one wants to ask a question that could come off as silly. It’s destroying my ability to get anything done during the day. It’s a complete performance and it drives me nuts.
