I’m sharing this as a cautionary tale. I did exactly what we're trained to do: I identified potential risk to the bank, escalated concerns through appropriate channels, documented issues, and involved the right stakeholders. These were not theoretical concerns—they were concrete issues with governance and policy implications.

Shortly after escalating, my relationship with leadership changed. The tone shifted. Support disappeared. And ultimately, I was terminated for “performance.”

Wells Fargo frequently emphasizes values like “Do the Right Thing,” accountability, and speaking up without fear of retaliation. In my experience, those values hold only when raising concerns is convenient and non-disruptive. When escalation becomes uncomfortable or reflects poorly on leadership, the response is very different.

The lesson I learned is simple: actions reveal culture more accurately than internal messaging. Culture isn’t defined by posters or town halls. It’s defined by what happens to people who test it.
