I appreciate watches as objects of permanence in a world of throwaway goods.
I started wearing good looking quartz watches a couple of years ago because I think they make business dress look much more put together. I only recently got into mechanical watches because A) they’re cool, and B) like everything else I take things way too far with items I am into.
For me a fine mechanical watch is about the only accessible, physical, concentrated dose of human ingenuity applied at human scale. Just marvelous.
More fashion forward than I thought). Now I appreciate time more than ever and just marvel at the intricacies in some of these complications. Also as a form of expression a watch can say a lot about someone...
I was in my late teens when cellphones came to India and it was in my very early 20s that I could afford one. Till then it was always a wrist watch for time and now I feel naked if I don’t wear one, even though I rarely use it to check the time.
Never cared for watches, but was gifted a sub for my 20th birthday. It took a couple months for it to grow on me and I haven’t taken it off ever since... I’ve bought other, more expensive, watches but I always gravitate back to my sub...
always liked watches since my first casio (early 1980’s). now watches are still a fascination and I feel like it is the only acceptable big jewelry purchase as a guy. father had a rolex datejust when I was growing up then he got a sub. when I got married my parents gave me a zenith el premiero and when I turned 32 my dad gave me his sub as he had upgraded to a yacht master. I love the sub (two tone) - recently had rolex refurb and service it (came back like a new watch).
All my cousins are in the watch business and growing up I used to help them. Got to learn about them early.
