I looked at making that same move recently and highly recommend taking the SHRM cert training for two reasons. 1) The job market is tough so you're less likely to get hired into an HR Generalist role without a SHRM cert. 2) most important, I spent $1,500 on certs and training that ultimately convinced me not to make the move. You may have a different outcome after completing the training course as it may reinforce your decision but without diving deep into what the role really entails, you're flying blind. OJT won't make up for a lack of prep and if it is the wrong job, it's better to find out beforehand.

It probably depends on the company. Large, highly regulated orgs are more likely to want SHRM or prior generalist experience. Startups and mid-sized companies tend to value transferable skills and practical judgment over credentials.
