Everyone has areas they can improve. It’s very hard for someone to nail both the technical and the interpersonal skills sides. Sometimes if you’re absolutely nailing it, the feedback is for some fine tuning you may need. If you’re blowing it, you’ll get a warning on the general areas you need to improve.
Negative reviews are for when you’re making very basic mistakes: incomplete research, missing applicable legislation, blowing deadlines, poor communication, inappropriate behavior etc. You’d be surprised by how many idiots can spend years in Biglaw without being shown the door.
Positive feedback usually comes when you’re excelling at what’s listed in your job description (i.e. lawyering) but could still change how you address the partners, get to know the other practice areas at the firm, how to manage your juniors, business development, client management etc. It’s usually feedback on how you can progress to the next level.
Usually it’s just because the partners are lazy
Yes! Completely normal and I would say a “perfect” review is rare and probably just someone who is scared to give feedback
Yes-at least 70 percent of associates that I know have been told this. It’s a constant work in progress. Even spellcheck misses sometimes. We are humans not robots 🤖
Try to connect with every partner on a personal level. Bill everything and keep track of pages and amounts of things while tying it to some part of the case that only a lawyer is qualified to do. Understand the case: know the law at issue, the facts, and what’s been produced in discovery. That way, when you do research, it is relevant and valuable.
I’m trying to find a client. How tf do I do that!? Anyone? See! There’s always room for improvement.
