I’m trying to figure out why I’m not getting interviews. I’ve been in this space a long time, but I’m worried that showing my first job out of school is hurting me. I’m in my 50s and wondering if I should just list my recent experience to avoid being screened out. Does trimming your resume actually work, or do they find out your age anyway?

I only list experience related to the job in applying to and leave off prior work.

Succinct and clear...good, and it's worked for you?

I keep my résumé to the last 15 years. Anything past that just opens me up to age discrimination and the job market is hard enough without that. I would keep it to two pages maximum, 15 years maximum.

I’ve been looking for a role for about five months now, and I haven’t had any luck either. I honestly think it’s just the state of the job market right now. I’ve tried trimming my resume down, adding things back in—nothing seems to make a difference.

Is your experience in demand, if not remote, where you live? Hundreds respond in 30 min, thousands of candidates? Can you get in front of them? Must not only show you're special, unique fitting their culture or the kind of different they need, which is what? Must prove it and stand out, be distinctive, enough to be interview worthy...then, not chosen after multiple interviews. How can you get around this process in todays market? I'd call the mgr you'd report to and ask two key questions, you need to know about wanting to work for him and for his firm...if he answers them accurately, I'd say he sounds like the kind of boss you want and need to work with...then, ask if you can see him "in person" as money is time and that is most efficient for both of you....if you agree, are you able to take that kind of risk? Would that impress this Manager...if you don't know, this could be your 3rd question to move forward. Afterall, you need a job NOW or was it 3 - 5 mos ago? I don't know but millions are applying online, yes?

Yes, trimming early career roles can help. Most recruiters focus on the last 10 to 15 years. Remove graduation dates and older roles unless directly relevant. Focus on recent impact and results. It reduces unconscious bias without being misleading.

Agree. Always headhunter/Recruiter before online...keep in mind, I'm a Senior, youthful spirit, nothing is too hard to do if you really want it, high-energy never goes away. Sales is "people energy", can't show energy online even via Zoom! Must meet in person! So years go by if you stick to "Online Only" in any field, don't advise that, Get in front of them. My sister was an xray tech in CA, laid off, moved back to ID, passed MRI Tech so applied direct on website, called Mgr of her role, drove to 3 states, for appts, impressed Mgrs two offered to pay her to relocate 2 different states. Online is a game with "terms"/"algorhythms" and it's up to a person who chooses yours to print or send to decision maker! Yikes! Really, I don't want my future depending on an assistant or person who doesn't clearly value what I listed, even if it matches the job, most do, right? Sound alike as you get advice from same resources. NO DATES ONLINE, why? Gives age which should not matter, but it usually does as people stereotype, If they put 1-2 yrs, max 5 yrs and you are there, send it but must STAND OUT and GET CHOSEN, what control do you have with that? It's good to know you are young person they can train but is that enough to know?

I worked in OC, CA Field/Exec Sales always NEED HIGH ENERGY, people have it or don't and keep it throughout their life! I was in varied industries, telecomm, high-tech distributor chip sales, intangible sales testing chips. Married late, so retired young in Hawaii; shipped our sportfisher there to raise kids, started in advertising to island businesses in 3 major hotel publications, Sold our sportfishing biz in the same publications = top 10 vessels in first yr. VP of Sales for custom land touring co & Dir of helicopter tour co. To be home w/kids, sold for the best global firms to work for & best product to sell to others in HI~ Hilton Grand Vac Club & Shell Vac Club T/S to high-end only. Also, HI & SO CAL Interior Designer assistant to amazing custom interior & landscape designer high-end only! Or it's tough to close. CA Realtor 1099 for yrs, no longer want 1099, so I apply for Sales w/Salaries + Bonus/Comm in what I know best, RE interior, exterior, furnishings, best brands/firms ~ strengths; obviously overcome obstacles, easily adapt to change w/in multiple markets & brands, thrive meeting new people, promote new products w/strong people skills to influence, team player and visionary to build, produce & succeed. Hope ideas help....do things differently than others to stand out.

Have you been able to ask "Why am I not getting chosen for interviews? Please advise so I learn what to do or not do?

I am hardly an expert, but I was told to shave off anything older than 10 years or mearely make it a mention. the job portals have spaces where you can add all of that information. All the best. We are all in the same boat.

Are there certain firms that are more accepting of Tax backgrounds entering advisory positions? I’m a CPA with a couple years regional tax experience looking to transition to advisory/deals, but have struggled getting big 4 advisory interviews even with solid recommendations.
I’ve heard there’s solid opportunities in advisory type work for some other large firms outside big 4. Has anybody made a similar transition?

So, I’m interviewing for a position that fits perfectly, HR likes my profile, had great conversations with them. Today I had a Panel interview with HR and the hiring manager. The manager is not experienced, it’s her first r manager role and she’s been in it for 3 months. I was prepared but was out of breath the entire interview, had a knot in my throat, had trouble finding my words. It’s like I had PTSD when this manager came into the picture. Ever had that?

I have a contact who is a hiring mgr at a company I want to work for. He told me he has an open role for me and set me up with 6 interviews over a 2 week period. They all went really well and HR said I’ll most likely be moving forward to a site visit. But now my contact has ghosted me. After I made 3 outreaches he had his aa schedule time for two weeks out. How long is the recruitment process from E2E? From first time recruiter reaches out to when you sign offer letter? I know this will vary but very curious because the people I’m interviewing with talk about how long it is a lot

So I’m planning on leaving my position before school starts, but the application and interview process has been slow. At this point I’m afraid I won’t find a job until late July. Should I let my school now and let them post my job as an anticipated position? I’d hate for them to have to find someone last minute, but I also want to keep that school as a fall back just in case. Unfortunately, it’s a terrible position and there has not been a lot of interest in it in the past.

I have been at my company for 3.5 years.
