Your TC seems on the low end but not surprising if you went in-house several years back. I’m in the process of moving in house and I’ve been quoted TC packages for 3 YOE where the top end of the range is $220k to $240k. You likely need to do exactly what you’re trying to do - move to a new company - to get a raise.
Rising Star
That is market at some top tech companies in the Bay Area. My TC (not including equity) was higher than that as a 4th year, but was that as a third year in 2020. Non-FAANG SaaS, late-stage private.
Check the MLA reports. Comp has gone up 15-25% for non-exec legal in the Bay Area in the past 2 years.
A year ago I was an associate corporate counsel at a medical diagnostics company (decent sized company owned by a larger foreign company TC 116k (to keep me I was offered a title bump and TC of 143k. I’ve gotten wind that they are now paying senior roles around TC 200k when I was there it was 160k for a senior title). I switched to another company as Corporate Counsel , large also foreign owned, fully remote, TC 195k. (I had another offer at the time for 185k from a tech company, not FAANG but next tier if that’s helpful, they weren’t remote though so I went with the other offer) i live in the West, not west coast HCOL but it’s definitely not cheap here either. I just accepted a FAANG for a total comp of 345k and relocation to higher cost of living than I am now, but get to bank that higher pay where I currently live for about 6 months before moving. I say that to say it can be all over the place. But literally in a year I’ve also tripled my comp by keeping an open mind with recruiters🤷♀️. I wouldn’t normally leave somewhere this quickly but it is what it is ha! YOE 8.
My position’s in the health/medical field were general corporate work ie a TON of contracts. (Commercial, marketing, procurement, some R&D etc). Next role is product counsel with one of the tech teams.
16 YOE. Also insurance regulatory. Insurance tends to be a little lower from what I can tell. Just moved from a TC 235k job w/o equity to a job with equity and estimated TC 250k. MCOL.
Starting an Associate Counsel position at a Fortune 500 with 5 YOE. TC is 240k a year. MCOL area.

Sounds a little lower. I think with your YOE, TC should be at least 255+, high 200s wouldn’t be a stretch at all.
7 YOE, F200 tech, 210k TC, MCOL
9 YOE, F50 (non-FAANG), HCOL, 225k TC
I literally went through 10 hours of interviews, several writing samples, and at least 20+ hours of prep. No feedback given… oh well!
Tempted to answer this, but not sure my answer would be meaningful. Am I the only one with highly variable comp? This year, I'm likely to earn approx. 2.5x what I'll earn 3 years from now (not looking forward to that drop...).
Do others have variances that might be over say 50% from one year to the next? Or is it mostly stable?
2YOE, Big 4, MCOL (but bought home early so housing costs on the low end), 150 TC
I've seen many things, but is there a definitive answer about what's included in TC?
Great question… no equity for me. 175k base, rest is bonus which tends to be fairly predictable with a solid 401k, which I count too
12 YOE, private multinational company (HQ in Asia), HCOL (not as high as the Bay Area), TC 190k (no equity, no set bonus)
I know my TC was “low” a long time ago (started at first in house role at base 75k 6-7 years ago). I switched job twice in the pandemic and got the190k.

16 YOE. F100 tech company remote in HCOL area. 250k all in. Compensation elsewhere for my experience can range way higher depending on the company and job however.
