I would say, yes. I went in-house last year and it was exactly the change I needed. Previously, I did IP prosecution (almost exclusively patents) for a larger firm. At one point I had over 1500 active, pending matters (3500k if you included matters I managed post grant annuities for). I averaged 1800 hours (which we know is a ton in transactional law where you’re only billing in .1-.5 increments). I finally hit burn out (I have 17 YOE).
Now that I’m the client, I don’t foresee it getting any better in a firm setting. There are so many 3rd parties that can do your foreign filings, IDS, and formality documents for a fraction of the cost. Add the advancement of AI (which we are already asking our firms how they are or plan to leverage in the future) and firms are going to be expected to do a lot more with less. Note: I’m not fear mongering AI replacing the legal field, I’m just saying firms are going to have to make adjustments.
While all corporations are not created equal, I would encourage you to see if that’s an option you would be interested in and take the time to find one that seems to be a good fit.
Unfortunately that’s been the mentality of firms and companies for a long time - do more with less. If you’re getting paid overtime rake it in.
Also, set boundaries. You cannot be available 24/7. Ask for deadlines in order to prioritize.
Also doing the work of a few, and no end is in sight. I’ve been looking around at other firms to see if it would be worth the time to make a move, or it’ll be more of the same. Still not sure, but might as well look.
