In a meeting yesterday, our business unit leader told our finance leader that he did something incorrectly (in his opinion) related to forecast. I was surprised that the two had never communicated on the subject. What else would surprise people at the executive level? I figured that they would have been on the same page.

Disconnections happen at every level. I’m more impressed that they were able to communicate and not go through passive-aggressive comments that never actually address the issue. What I think will surprise people, and this will vary greatly, but most execs are knowledgeable and not just a mouthpiece.

I've seen things like that happen. Two people may literally not be on the same page as they're basing judgments on different reports, or material from different dates, and so on. You can't ever assume that everyone is operating from the same set of facts.

I’ve been surprised to discover just how casual executive level leadership is with each other. I always view them in a more formal light, and I forget at the end of the day they’re just each other’s coworkers.

That actually doesn’t surprise me as much as it probably should. 😅 At the executive level, people assume alignment just because titles are high. But silos, assumptions, and missed conversations still happen. Sometimes even more so, because everyone is busy and operating with partial information.

I figured they would have discussed it since they are in the same circle. Obviously not!
