In the full scheme of things, on average do you think employees enjoy WFH because they actually can slack off more easily while no ones watching and they can do less and get away with it, or because they’re authentically able to be more effective and drive results in their work?

I like it because I can do both of those things. I can sit on the couch or run errands or walk my dog when I need to take a break, and also because when I get into focus mode I’m not so easily interrupted.

Generally, I’d imagine people are getting the same amount of “work” done but it doesn’t always require them to be in their seat for 8 hours a day everyday.

It also allows you to set up your day however you choose (within reason). Doctors appts, house maintenance, etc are SO much easier to work into your day once you’ve removed the commute to the office.

likesmart

Going to an office 8 hours a day is an antiquated norm that was in place because people didn’t have laptops, desktops, or even internet at home. Now with teleconferencing and Zoom we don’t need to be in an office 8 hours a day anymore. Side note- man Microsoft really dropped the ball with the Skype/Teams - Zoom debacle didn’t they.

Of course some execs are saying “come back to office full time” bc they have invested millions and billions in infrastructure and don’t really care about their workers wellbeing. I mean think about it- I’ve known people personally who used to drive 1-1.5 hours EACH away to sit in a beige cubicle for 8 hours per day and have minimal interaction. Yes it helps to go into small huddle rooms to problem solve or have a quick chat but for me, Zoom solves that and provides up to 90% of the original experience which is enough for me. Obviously this applies to mainly software or technical jobs and not hardware roles.

It still blows my mind that bankers and analysts are being called back bc from what I learn from my IB friends- early on you are really waiting around for 2-3 hours for associates or VPs to hand you model corrections, etc- why can’t this be done from home. I deff understand the risk of data privacy but I don’t think every situation falls under that.

Just my rant of the day…

likefunny

Yeah, neither really for me. I think the quality of my work has been pretty consistent, and the hours billed have held steady too. I like WFH bc it makes the non-work parts of my life a lot better.

like

I slack more at the office because everyone comes by my office and wants to chit chat and that eats up hours of my day. At home I have a lot less distractions (distractions I can control.)

like

I also read a statistic that on average women were spending two more weeks per year getting ready for work than men. 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 NTY!

likefunny

Authentically able to be more effective and drive results without adhering to outdated office norms - distracting cube or hot seat environment, forced office interactions, interruptions, waiting around to use conference rooms, wasting time on a commute, and the list goes on.... I’m an ambivert and struggle to think when there’s too much noise around me.

I’ve also been able to take care of me better, going to bed early, eating healthier by making meals at home, gym lunch breaks bc my VP and colleagues can’t judge me for taking a break off site, etc.

2020 and into early 2021 was one of my most productive years and added so much great work for brands to my portfolio.

like

Both and I feel “slacking off” should be reframed as “not feel guilt for taking a mental break to be more productive in the long run”.

likesmart

I have to admit that my initial reaction when everyone was gung-ho about it I thought it was because they were more easily able to slack off. After getting used to it out of necessity for a year and a half, I think my days of WFH are actually much more productive than my days in the office.

like

I’ll add that “slacking” at home will work itself out over time. For people who know (and care) that they are unable to be productive at home, they’ll go work in the office. For people who are taking advantage of the “freedom” and not getting their work done, it’s not like their supervisor doesn’t know that! I’m not sure how someone could “get away” with being a slacker at home for an extended period of time. It’ll show up in their performance reviews, same as it would if they were in person. And for other people, who are able to fairly balance their work and personal lives, great!

Speak for yourself. I actually work more when at home.

I was recently offered a Zoom interview. The school had 10 interview slots for me to choose from. Three were one day this week and the rest are next week. I chose the first time slot available. Should I have waited until one of the last slots so I was fresher on their mind when choosing a candidate? I am just sitting here stressing out until I here something. Also, do interviewers still appreciate a hand written thank you for the interview?
