Incoming summer associate at a NY big law firm - what’s the general attitude on summers taking days off? I’m hoping to take 1-2 days off for separate family events. Is this likely to cause any issues?

At my firm, it is discouraged, but not the end of the world if it is a very important personal/family event.

1-2 days is totally fine

Hmm why would you trick OP like this?

Definitely ask. I took two days for a family wedding and it was fine.

Totally fine! I took a 3-day weekend out of state when my sister was getting engaged, but I flagged to the program coordinator as soon as I knew.

just communicate ahead of time and make sure you note that it’s preplanned family event it’s hardly any time missed for them to care

Ask your firm! Last summer my firm gave us two vacation days, both of which could be used on any day (as long as they weren’t used during the first week or the last week of the program).

I’m a first year associate (almost second year). I work at a national firm and I’m not a litigator. When I started with the firm, I was told I could work out of any office. Long story short, I regret choosing the office that I chose. I’d like to transfer to another office - is that a difficult ask? I’m licensed in the state I’d like to transfer to. I don’t know how to make this request.

Hi, weird question for this forum, so I apologize. I’m trying to be creative here and use the tv stand that I have. The issue is that it has an open back so you can see all my tv wires. I can’t hide the wires because my building won’t let me open the wall. My idea was to slip a tile sheet that is wall behind the tv stand as a back, but I need the tile cut to the specific heigh and width of the tv stand. Does anyone know where I can take this tile sheet to get cut to the specific measurements?

Partners - Do you ever take vacations?

I have been at my current firm for about 1.5 years, and in that entire time the partner in my group hasn't been out of the office a single time. Is that normal? I can't tell if it's standard for big law partners to not take time off, if the dynamics for my group may be different (only 1 partner in the entire group), or it the partner I work with is just a masochist.

Foreign LLM student here. I plan to take the NY bar exam in February. I’m thinking of taking a bar prep course (most likely Barbri). They offer two options: the “traditional” course (which lasts around 2.5 months) and an extended 6-month course. The difference in price is substantial – 2.5k for the traditional course vs 6k for the extended one. Any thoughts/recommendations on which one I should take? In case it is helpful, I come from a civil law country. Thanks!
