Terrific program. Got me out of accounting into data analysis then data science. 10/10 would recommend
I am graduating this Spring. I work full-time and have a family. Once enrolled you have 6 years to complete it. The program was developed for working professionals and offers flexibility to help navigate any blocks one may stumble upon. It took me 4 years to complete and I managed to do it without taking classes during summer terms. I didn't have any pressure to graduate and I decide it to do it for self-development and not necessarily to drive a career change. However, I confess that the course has paid itself pretty quickly and my company decided to take my capstone project and transform it into a product to help our demand forecasting practice.
Highlights:
- Highly affordable (by design) compared to any other program available in the market (at least until 2 years ago).
- Has a hybrid course grade made up of Engineering, Computer Science and Business classes. You can take it to any direction you want your skills/career to go.
- You can take it easy and take semesters off as life gets busy.
What to expect:
- It's a self-pacing course, but there are various opportunities to meet up with colleagues for meet up (around some major US cities) and group studies.
- Business classes professors are more present and available for live interaction. In computer science courses, you will only talk to TAs. Engineering classes are more of a mix, depending on the professor. Had great experiences and chances to learn a lot from these office hour meetings.
- The course is rigorous and grade process is fair. Don't jump in thinking it will be an easy ride, but it's all doable.
- New courses are added constantly, but not at the pace at which innovation keeps happening in the industry, but that's okay as the course will help you gain the foundation and skills to learn new stuff all the time.
Word of advice:
- If you don't come with a strong math background, complete all the pre-requisite classes.
- Complete the first 3 core courses and jump straight to Simulation (ISYE6644). This will give you a strong technical, analytical and math foundation for any other course you will have in the program.
- Many courses will be either in Python or R, some allow for any language. Commit to one of these languages and go deep. Once it's mastered you can switch and learn other ones. However, most will say to focus on Python from the get go as it's the the facto data science programming language these days.
This is great! Thank you for taking the time to write this 🙏
Yep! Finishing up in December. How is it in what sense?
You’re welcome! Let me know if you have other questions and I’ll try my best to answer them
I've actually been looking into the program myself, so following this! I've heard it's very challenging but highly rewarding, especially in terms of career advancement. The online format is flexible, but you still get a lot of support from professors and peers. Would love to hear more from anyone else who's done it!
You won’t get support from professors, generally speaking. You’ll often get really good TAs who are helpful though so don’t really feel a loss there!
will this course helping in term of new opportunity for job? i am stuck in my career and really wanted to move ahead.
