Yes and yes
Would highly recommend paying out of pocket if the damage is minor. Insurance companies on the whole are being pretty ruthless with raising rates for any claims.
Definitely counterintuitive to what they should be doing and/or allowed to do, but for now it is what it is.
Sc1 recommend you don't encourage murder over a car insurance premium, wtf is wrong with you
I worked in insurance as an insurance salesman. Hitting a deer is not going to take your rate. There will however be a raise in your rate usually every year.
Insurance companies will look for anything they can to raise your rates, but hitting a deer is not something they can or should be raising your rate for. If that happens I would fight it. Could ask around for a lawyer who would only get paid once you've won your case.
Now, on the other hand. If you hit ANY PERSONAL PROPERTY after hitting the deer, that will definitely raise your rates.
I'm talking about if you run into someones yard and mess up the grass and they file a claim or if you hit their mailbox car ect, anything like that can and will raise your rate if they make a claim against you.
Otherwise you should be perfectly fine.
Personally... Not to sound like flow, but I would suggest switching to progressive when you have the opportunity, because you'll be saving yourself a lot of headaches over dealing with GEICO when it comes to accident claims. I'm not trying to preach to you about car insurance or anything, but I'm sure there's plenty of other advocates you can talk to on here that will tell you the same thing even if not to progressive, but I would suggest paying out of pocket if it's minimal damage, and getting away from GEICO insurance before you end up in debt with an accident claim.
I say progressive, because there's not a lot of insurance companies out there that offer accident forgiveness after x amount of years safe driving, among other benefits from their rewards program.
