Is it just me or have salaries in industry come down significantly? Jobs with titles I recruited for 2 years ago are now regularly going for $20-30K lower, despite inflation/COL having increased a fair amount across the board. I'm in a MCOL city and controller roles are topping out at like $130-140K at companies that aren't brand names or even offer a lot of perks/work in a cool industry to make up for everything else. Am I just seeing shit jobs or is anyone else seeing this too?

You’re not imagining it, I’ve noticed the same trend. Feels like companies are lowballing more, even as expectations for experience and workload stay high. Maybe the market’s cooling post-pandemic hiring surge? Either way, it’s frustrating. Are you seeing this across all industries or mainly mid-sized firms?

like

I'm not looking at public accounting companies, so can't comment about mid-sized firms. I'm looking to get out of my stressful advisory role, but it seems like I'll have to take a sizable pay cut to do so. And yes, I'm seeing it across a lot of industries. The only places that haven't taken pay down is the elite tech companies, but they'll typically down-level you or are just INSANELY competitive to where it's a moot point about them being available. I'd personally rather take a pay cut than get down-leveled to senior associate type of roles again because I absolutely can't stand being responsible for the first cut of spreadsheets after doing it for so long in my career already (no offense).

Pretty frustrating to not get paid for the experience (and BS) I've had to put up with for 10+ years, but c'est la vie I guess...

Well theres a surplus supply of accountants with the huge rush to leave PA, triggered by offshoring so it does make sense

Yes, I've considered leaving PA several times over the years and have noticed the same. Entry level positions have gone up significantly over the years, but experienced positions seem to have recently dropped to pre-covid rates

Yeah, in my area is the overall trend. I am interviewing tomorrow for an Accounting Manager position $120k is the top. I am still interviewing but that's low for a Manager considering I was making $110k remotely in a Senior Fund Accounting position.

Anecdotally, I recently left advisory in a public accounting firm for an industry role and had to take a pay cut to do so (I was actively looking for well over a year to no avail). I was burnt completely out in public and figured that the lower pay would be offset by the lower stress and improved quality of life, but if anything my new company is more stressful and I regret every bit of my decision.
