Is it normal for a 9th year associate who may not have done a lot of pubco M&A (their primary practice is private M&A) to continually say when asked to work on a small deal, “I’ve never done this before so not sure how helpful I can be”?

They’re just trying to manage expectations.

I think it depends. If someone has truly never done a public deal (even a small one) as a midlevel or senior stepping into one with the responsibilities of a ninth year is risking trouble if something goes wrong, is missed and/or the partner goes AWOL.

like

Agree with this. I almost entirely do private M&A and when I have clients that want to do public M&A, I always bring in a public M&A partner and associate team that can carry the torch on that stuff. Most of the time, I know what to do, but there are moments that I don’t know what I don’t know, so could easily gloss over an issue or something I should be doing if I didn’t have the right folks helping me.

When assigning work I absolutely like to know if someone has never done a particular task etc before so that I can provide background and guidance and moderate expectations. I’d much rather have that situation vs someone who acts all confident then delivers crap unexpectedly.

I always say this no matter the task

Kind of sounds like a punt to me - a way to get out of doing something that they don't feel will benefit them in any way.

like

I think this is probably it given the surrounding circumstances.

I should specify this isn’t the first time. They say this anytime I’ve assigned work. Unfortunately the firm doesn’t have anyone experienced in my area so this is the best I can get for now.

There are other details that make me believe there is a lack of willingness to learn something or tackle something new.

I could be wrong though.

Yeah if they use it as an excuse to not to the work or not learn that’s bad.

Joining a big firm next week as fully remote lateral and flying out to home office for orientation. The schedule has me in office until 4:15. I’ve already been told I won’t have any actual work. Depending on how many people are there and how it feels, I was planning to stay an hour extra but should I hang around the office until later? First time visiting this city so it’d be great to take in some sights too (although that’s not a priority of course).

Serious billing question - if during the course of the day, you first receive an email from Client A at say 11:10am and you read it, you then respond to it at 12:20pm. You get another email at 2pm from Client A and respond immediately. The next email comes in at 4pm, you read it and respond only at 4:30pm. None of the email responses take more than 3-5mins. You are working on matters for other clients at all other times during the day. How much are you billing for Client A?
