Answer the question. You must have a desired range. Say so. If you’re not in their range, move on. Every question asked is a test: if knowledge, if boldness, of character, of experience. Not answering is not being competitive.
Why do you want to waste your time talking to people if they’re no where near your salary expectations?
Sharing your salary expectations saves everybody time. It ensures your financial expectations align with the company's budget, preventing you from advancing through a multi-week interview process only to find out the position pays less than you require.
