It feels more warranted for junior positions and people without established portfolios. I would personally never do a test project. If a creative director can’t tell if they like my work enough to hire from interviewing, references, and my book I don’t really trust that their discernment is attuned.

We've only done it once and it was a 3rd round thing. It was a simplified version of a brief we had gotten (and already completed) for a client, so we weren't trying to get ideas or anything. I was shocked by how bad some of the copy was, and it really helped us find someone we could actually use.
Yes and don't do it.
that's something they do in tech because I guess programmers do coding tests so why not writing tests for writers, or something.
i've never had an actual advertising agency give me a writing test.
