I’m making 55k in Chicago. Am I underpaid?
Hi, I been working for Lloyds Bank for almost 9 years now , I recently attended a interview for Barclays and offered an Senior Business Analyst AVP role in Wealth and private banking area. I did not see much difference in the salary offered and it is pretty much same ie 68.5k.But the difference is current role is London based, however the Barclays one is based in Glasgow where cost of living is less in comparison. I am unable to decide whether to take the offer or not..any suggestions will be helpful pls.

I guess it depends on what the opportunity is. I’ve taken a pay cut a couple of times and I’ve never regretted it. The first big cut (like 50%) was when I went from being a highly paid, but terribly unsatisfied “graphic artist” (read: presentation maker) in order to take a job as an assistant producer. Prior to that, I took an unpaid internship (at 28!) in order to learn production so that I could get that AP job. It didn’t take very long to catch up with my colleagues who started out in the industry 8 years before I did.
I think if the opportunity is for greater experience, then it’s probably worth it. If the pay cut is for a title, it’s not worth it. I also might not take a cut to work at a hot shop. In that case, the size of the cut would matter. Hot shops are often sweatshops, so you don’t want to be underpaid to boot.
Where are you now and how much of a cut? Kind of depends on the opportunity / where you are headed
Sometimes you have to take 1 step back to go two steps forward. This won't be the last time in your career you may have to do this. If you are worried, try getting another week vacation, or see if you can have a review at the 6th month mark. Good luck!
In this current market, if it’s a good opportunity, it’s definitely worth considering. If it’s a pay cut to work on crap, then no
Thanks for the feedback folks! It’s a lateral move for a smaller shop that’s got the type of projects I’m interested in. But $25K pay cut and definitely longer hours. Heard about some turnover happening too so on the fence. :-/
