Is it normal that my firm doesn’t give me authority to negotiate or settle claims? For context I have been at this firm for 1 year, I am a third year attorney. I only work on cases that are in litigation. No fee sharing, unless I originate the case.

Depends on the volume and case values. I prob wouldn’t trust a newer attorney to the firm to negotiate by themselves on cases > 100k but smaller values would be fine so long as they know their ceiling/floor.

Leave your firm. If you have three years experience you should be able to conduct your own settlement negotiations. It appears you are going to be doing only discovery at that firm.

like

Not normal. You should be able to resolve case. Also, you should be getting a bonus based on a percentage of the cases you resolve.

like

Not normal but also not a huge deal in my opinion. You’ll get there eventually

We give our attorneys authority to settle cases in litigation from Day 1 unless you just graduated from law school or have no PI experience, but even then you likely have authority within the first 3-6 months after training

I was just going to say this. All the associates I work for have authority to settle cases in litigation. If they don't have experience they have a mentor for their first 6 months that has the ultimate say on settlement but after that they are left on their own to settle cases freely.

What type of lit? I work in med mal and typically it’s the carriers, not the firm, that aren’t giving authority to low level attorneys for settlement negotiations.

Yes. Because they are penny pinching during economic recession.

At my uncles wedding in Madrid I remember lying down on the grass in the courtyard after their first dance and crying, my Dad came and saw me, laid down in his suit beside me and asked what was wrong.

“I know my boyfriend wouldn’t dance with me like that at our wedding”

And we just lay there as I cried, and then got up. Had a drink.

Said boyfriend left years ago, and now I have a wonderful man who just asked me what type of dance lessons I want for our wedding next year.

Don’t give up.

Or should i just try to find a job with a salary that covers a nanny salary and accept that i will never see my son on weekdays (which would be sad for both of us)? TIA!
