Assuming they are also taking all the credit, yes, very normal.
Yeah that’s kinda the whole thing
Yes. A lot of sarcastic comments here, but I had similar thoughts during my first couple of years of practice. This isn’t medicine, where the surgeon performs the same surgeries as the first year surgeon.
The practice of law is generally no different than any other business. The owners bring the work in, but push the actual work down the food chain to the lowest capable worker. It is generally the same as any other trade, but we have the ability to make a lot more money at it. I can assure you that the owner of the local large HVAC company in your area is not going up in your attic to install your new AC unit. The same concept applies to law.
With the caveat that they might be doing things on a given matter that you're not aware of, yes. That is often more or less how it works.
You have no idea what that partner is actually doing, and presumably they are originating the work. But yes, absolutely. They are managing you and others.
Yes, at most firms, partners are essentially middle managers that are supposed to also originate work, though in my experience most of them are really bad at both of those roles.
Yes. Follow the money. They bring in the clients then you do the work.

Welcome to your job?
Sometimes they’ll take your strategic calls and make them their own……substantive work…
You want me to draft that discovery for you?
Living the dream.
I am a new partner slowly getting more supervision duties. I was ‘that’ partner this week on one case. But I also did the substantive work on at least 15 other cases.
Yes, and they may also take no accountability….
lol but ethically
Next it’s your turn to find someone to do the same for you.
And what did you expect, peon?
Just a caveat, I’m a more junior associate with no mid level or senior to help direct me. I have a couple of years experience but in doing a different subset of work. The work I’m being asked to manage right now is completely new to me and fairly complex. The partner I’m working for is giving me no direction other than “you know…you just look at”
Many Partners (not all) have no clue how to interact with and train fresh junior attorneys. This is why midlevels and seniors are usually tasked with doing it. I'm sorry, but it sounds like you're in a position where you're going to have a partner who doesn't know how to manage and mentor you. Are they hiring any mid levels or seniors who might be able to take you under their wing?
That’s a recipe for professional misconduct unless of course they are doing so to write down your time even when they have leveraged your contribution on the file.
The partner usually is doing things you don’t see, and if a task is given to you, even if it seems like everything on a given engagement, you being trusted to do it all means it is something someone with your experience can be expected to do, and they usually at least will review it. If they aren’t even reviewing, that usually is because they trust you and it is something they have given you feedback or training on in prior situations, They also usually have brought in the work or are at least managing the client. And all this is even in that rare case where you might feel like you are “doing everything” and they don’t even review it.
Yep, sorry
